A First Trip Abroad

Last spring, Selim, a fifteen-year-old boy from Monastir, travelled abroad for the first time with his uncle. His uncle had bought the plane tickets on the Internet a month before, because they were much cheaper online.

At Monastir airport, everything went fast. “Could you show me your passports, please?” asked the officer. “Would you mind putting your bag on the belt?” said another. Selim was nervous, but his uncle smiled: “If you follow the rules, everything will be fine.”

In Istanbul, they visited the Blue Mosque and took a boat on the Bosphorus. “I have never seen such a big city!” said Selim. He bought a souvenir for his sister in the Grand Bazaar. “That will be two hundred liras,” said the shopkeeper. “It’s very kind of you to give us a discount,” answered his uncle with a smile.

Every evening, Selim sent photos to his family with his phone. “Video calling is wonderful,” he wrote to his mother. “I feel that you are with me.” When he came back, he decided to learn Turkish. “If I speak Turkish, I will make new friends on my next trip,” he says.

Writing: an email about a trip

writing and self-assessment

You have just come back from a trip (in Tunisia or abroad).

Task: write an email of 8 to 10 lines to your English-speaking friend Emma. Tell her how you travelled, what you visited and bought, and what you will do if you go there again.

Steps
  1. I read the task and underline: who I write to, the topic, the length, the type of text.
  2. I list my ideas, then I put them in order: introduction, two or three points, conclusion.
  3. I write my draft with linking words (first, then, because, while, so, finally).
  4. I check with the checklist: grammar of the module, spelling, capital letters, full stops.

A model text to compare with (after writing mine)

Hi Emma,

I have just come back from Tozeur, in the south of Tunisia, and I want to tell you everything! We travelled by train from Tunis: it took seven hours, but the desert landscape was amazing. We visited the old medina, with its beautiful brick walls, and we walked in the palm grove. I have never seen so many palm trees in my life! In the market, I bought a small carpet for my room and dates for my grandmother. The best moment was the sunset on the dunes. If I go there again, I will take a balloon flight over the oasis. Have you ever been to a desert?

Write soon,
Nour

One good example among many: compare, don’t copy.
